Holidaymakers Should Check Travel Insurance Deals

Tourists should ensure they know what their travel insurance policy covers them for before they sign "on the dotted line", one insurance industry regulator has advised.

Travellers need to know what is covered.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has recommended that people double check the small print of a policy before agreeing to its conditions as it may mean they are not covered in areas that they need to be.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesman for the ABI, said: "[Customers] should actually understand what they are covered for. The essentials - what you would like to be covered for when you go abroad - are medical expenses and loss of baggage and possessions."

He added that not all travel insurance deals will cover the cancellation of holidays in situations such as the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico.

The ABI stated that not all policies will cover this risk as a travel policy which covered a person for everything would be unaffordable.

All non-essential travel to Mexico has been advised against by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
